Sisters, rivals and friends


The Iranian Moshiri sisters are TV presenters — Maryam for the BBC, Nazanine for al-Jazeera. Jenny Kleeman reports


As British Iranians, the Moshiris have a unique perspective on international news. Their family left Tehran for London in 1978, shortly before the Iranian revolution. Their grandparents had settled here in the 1950s and their father was educated at British schools, so it was always the intention for them to be raised in the UK, but the revolution meant they came here sooner than expected. Presenting on international channels means that the sisters have a committed fan base in Iran. “Iranian people tend to know their own,” Maryam says, “and they like their own people to be successful.”
